Currently we are seeking a Vice President, Government Relations.
The Vice President, Government Relations is principally responsible for the development and management of strategies to inform and influence public policy at the county, state and federal levels on issues and in areas of interest to Glacier Bay, and to advise the company on legislative matters that may affect it. This position will monitor legislation and public policy issues, and advise the Glacier Bay executive team of their potential. In addition, this role will be keenly aware of opportunities to make use of federal or state funds and policies to support Glacier Bay activities. The Vice President, Government Relations will mediate and/or advocate for Glacier Bay interests and build relations with other organizations and entities whose interests are similar.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The position will report to the CEO
- Advocate with California and other state governments on issues of importance to Glacier Bay and confer with officials of state government concerning the interests of Glacier Bay and the functional impact of proposed legislation; suggest modifications as appropriate.
- Establish relations with the members of the General Assembly, the Governor, the Council of State and other senior officials, whose policies and recommendations may relate to Glacier Bay.
- Establish relationships with local officials in the counties served and affected by Glacier Bay.
- Establish relationships in Washington, DC with senior-level appointed and elected officials to maintain their awareness of proposals and legislative matters that may affect Glacier Bay.
- Advocate with the U.S. Congress on issues of importance to Glacier Bay, and confer with federal officials concerning the interests of Glacier Bay and the functional impact of proposed legislation; suggest modifications as appropriate.
- Serve as policy advisor to the CEO on issues related to local government and the local community.
- Represent Glacier Bay to appropriate organizations or coalitions to establish and maintain contacts to aid and foster government relations activities.
- Research, monitor, analyze, and evaluate legislation and regulation issues that may have an impact on Glacier Bay to determine needs for action and recommend action to be taken.
- Draft position papers and legislation that accurately reflect the interests of Glacier Bay.
- Develop and implement a communication program to keep the Glacier Bay administration informed on governmental issues affecting Glacier Bay at all levels of government.
- Recommend operational changes necessitated by legislative mandates; suggest alternative policies and procedures to enable Glacier Bay to accomplish its objectives.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein as assigned by the CEO.
Required Experience
The successful candidate will have 10 or more years of experience as a government affairs executive with a major multinational company. Prior experience as a Congressional staffer or public servant in a relevant government department, agency or business is also appropriate. Specific industry experience, as well as international affairs experience, is an asset.
- Strong understanding of domestic/international issues and how Glacier Bay can strategically face the challenges of working with multiple governments in developing strategy.
- Well-versed in the trends of government affairs and the art of building strong relationships.
- An understanding of U.S. and international federal policy-making processes, including executive agencies, as well as think tanks and associations.
- Experience in managing professionals, staff members and consultants effectively.
- Specific transportation industry experience is greatly preferred but not absolutely necessary; however significant experience in a closely related field is critical.
- Prior experience with the DOE, DOT and EPA.
- Strong preference will be given to executives with international experience.
- Knowledge of and/or experience in operating in a matrixed environment, with the ability to effectively manage public scrutiny, crisis communications and media attention.
- A Bachelor’s degree is required. Advanced degree(s) preferred, in political science, government relations, public policy or equivalent.
